About Us

The Center for Regenerative Biology and Medicine (CRBM) was established in 2001 on the Indianapolis campus of Indiana University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), through a grant from the State of Indiana 21st Century Research and Technology Fund. The administrative home of the CRBM is the Department of Biology (www.biology.iupui.edu) in the School of Science (www.science.iupui.edu).

In 2007, the CRBM was designated as one of a cluster of multidisciplinary Signature Centers on the IUPUI campus. The Center interacts with other Signature Centers such as the Biomechanics and Biomaterials Research Center, the Center for Systems Biology and Personalized Medicine, and the Vascular and Cardiac Center for Adult Stem Cell Therapy, and with other universities that have regenerative biology and medicine as a research interest.

The CRBM has three missions:

• Multidisciplinary research aimed at understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of regeneration.
• Translation of basic research findings into regenerative medicine therapies through technology transfer.
• Graduate education leading to Biology MS and PhD degrees in regenerative biology and medicine.

Features of the CRBM that give it exceptional strength are:

• A focus on the regenerative biology and medicine of complex mammalian structures, such as the central nervous system, musculoskeletal system, liver and pancreas, and appendages.
• Experimental approaches that couple cell and molecular biology with strong bioinformatics and systems biology.
• A long-term goal of regenerating new tissue directly at the site of an injury by reprogramming adult somatic cells to adult stem cells, through the study of organisms such as amphibians and fish that can do this naturally.
• Strong scientific and commercial advisory boards.
