Cheryl R. Blanchard Cheryl holds a Bachelor of Science in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University, Alfred, New York, and a Masters of Science and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, both from the University of Texas at Austin.
She joined Zimmer in October 2000 as Director, Research, after 15 years of experience in biomaterials research and in directing basic and applied research for the government, corporations, and academic institutions. In August 2002, she was promoted to the position of Vice President, Research and Biologics responsible for the directing of research activities, including overseeing the discovery and innovation efforts focused on biologics and new or improved materials and processes. In October 2003, Dr. Blanchard was named to the position of Vice President, Corporate Research and Clinical Affairs and was named to the Zimmer Executive Committee. With this appointment, Dr. Blanchard took on the additional responsibility of the former Centerpulse Biologics group; the European Research structure and activities located in Winterthur, Switzerland; the worldwide Clinical Affairs activities currently located in both companies; and the consolidated Zimmer and Centerpulse Spine research activities currently located in Minneapolis and Winterthur. In January 2006, Dr. Blanchard was promoted into her current role and is now responsible for Global Research, Global Development, Global Quality, Global Regulatory, the Austin-based Biologics group, External Research, and Emerging Technologies.
Prior to joining Zimmer, she served in Manager, Professor and Fellow roles at the Southwest Research Institute, the University of Texas Health Science Center and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, respectively. She is currently a member of Biomedical, Regenerative Medicine and Engineering advisory boards at Notre Dame, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and Alfred Universities, respectively. Cheryl also serves as a member of the orthopaedic device forum.

Thomas F. Bumol is currently Vice President of the Biotechnology Discovery Research component at Lilly Research Laboratories, Indianapolis. As of February 2004, Dr. Bumol’s responsibilities also include Applied Molecular Evolution, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eli Lilly and Company based in San Diego, California. This component has responsibilities for bioproduct discovery research in platforms of genomics, protein optimization, peptides and monoclonal antibodies in collaboration with the company’s focused therapeutic areas and various external biotechnology alliances. He is also the chairperson of the company’s BioProduct Strategy Group and a member of several governing groups looking at discovery phase project/program portfolios; and the Portfolio Management Committees. His current group is advancing a number of bioproduct candidates into development in inflammation, cancer, and metabolic disease applications including diabetes and obesity.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, he received his B.S. degree in microbiology with distinction from the University of Michigan in 1975. He subsequently completed his Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Minnesota in 1980. Dr. Bumol was the recipient of a Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Research Fellowship for his postdoctoral studies in the Department of Molecular Immunology at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California from 1980-1982. He joined Lilly Research Laboratories as a Senior Immunologist in 1982 where he has remained for his career over the past twenty- three years. Dr. Bumol is on the National Technology Transfer Board for the University of Michigan. He is also on the Board of Trustees of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School and the co-chair of the Board of Directors of the Timmy Foundation of Indianapolis (timmyfoundation.org).

Harry L. Gonso is a partner with the Indianapolis law firm of Ice Miller. He has focused his practice on corporate transactions and securities work in a legal career that spans approximately 30 years. Currently, he leads Ice Miller’s life science practice. Mr. Gonso earned a BS degree in accounting from Indiana University Bloomington, and a JD degree from the School of Law, Indiana University Bloomington. As an undergraduate, he was an Academic All American and All Big-Ten football player, leading Indiana University to the Rose Bowl in the 1967 season. Mr. Gonso was Chief of Staff and Senior Council of the Office of the Governor in 2005 and 2006. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the IU Foundation and the Methodist Sports Medicine Foundation, and has served on the Board of the Regenstrief Foundation, the IUPUI Board of Advisors, and the IU school of Law Board of Visitors, as well as Director of numerous other organizations. In addition, he served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Indiana University for eighteen years, and as Vice President of the Trustees, from 1988 until his retirement in 1994. He was named a Distinguished Alumni Service Award recipient in 1995. Mr. Gonso has had extensive experience in assisting the growth of entrepreneurial companies and dealing with their capital and business growth needs, intellectual property protection and general business operations, and is actively involved in numerous capacities in support of the Indiana Life Sciences Initiative.

Kent Hawryluk is co-founder and Vice President, Business Development & Finance of Marcadia Biotech, Inc., an early-stage diabetes drug development company based in Carmel, Indiana. Mr. Hawryluk is also General Partner of Twilight Venture Partners (TVP). TVP is an early-stage life science venture capital fund with ten portfolio companies including Ambrx, Marcadia, and Quatrx Pharmaceuticals. Previously, Mr. Hawryluk was Managing Director of The Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc. (JEGI), an investment bank in New York serving the media and information industries. Additionally, he was a Founding Partner of JEGI Capital, a $62 million early-stage venture capital fund. Mr. Hawryluk spent the first eight years of his career as an international media entrepreneur. He founded the English-language newspapers The Prague Post and The Budapest Post in 1991 and 1992 respectively, and subsequently at Dow Jones was involved in starting several successful new businesses including WSJ.com. Mr. Hawryluk earned an A.B. from Princeton University and an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University (May 2007). He serves on the board of directors of Marcadia and Balamor Development Corp., and is also a Trustee of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Cynthia Helphingstine is Translational Scientific Officer for BioCrossroads where she is responsible for accelerating the advancement of research discoveries at Indiana University from the laboratory to the marketplace. Indiana University created Dr. Helphingstine’s position to bring the business development resources of BioCrossroads, a private stakeholder organization committed to expanding Indiana’s existing life science base, to further implementation of Indiana University’s Strategic Plan for Life Sciences. Dr. Helphingstine previously served as President and CEO of Tienta Sciences, a start-up company commercializing technology enabling detection and quantitation of very low levels of biomolecules, and was Vice President Business Development of Tienta’s parent company, Inproteo, LLC, a partnership between Eli Lily, Purdue and Indiana University. Prior to joining Inproteo, Dr. Helphingstine was President of The Biotron Group, Inc., a consulting firm she founded to assist healthcare and life science companies with product development initiatives, formation of strategic partnerships and establishment of new business ventures. Before founding Biotron, Dr. Helphingstine spent nine years at Baxter Healthcare Corporation where she held management positions in product and business development, program management and clinical research. Dr. Helphingstine holds a Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Missouri-Columbia, a BA in microbiology, also from UMC, and an MBA from the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management in Lake Forest, Illinois. She currently is an Advisor to the Board of the Indiana Center for Advanced Protein Studies (INCAPS), a life science company formed by BioCrossroads.

Michael C. Hiles is the Vice President for Research and Clinical Affairs at Cook Biotech Incorporated, a medical device firm specializing in the development of extracellular matrix (ECM) technologies for implantable and topical medical devices. Mike also holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine.
Prior to moving to Cook Biotech, Mike investigated these same materials as an Associate Research Scholar in the Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center at Purdue. Before that, he completed his graduate education through the same Biomedical Center and worked under a fellowship with Eli Lilly on the vascular applications of ECM. Dr. Hiles received his BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Purdue and his Ph.D. in Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology from the Veterinary Medical School at Purdue. He has published articles on catheter-based medical instrumentation, pharmacological intervention in acute animal disease, composition and structure of biomaterials, and biomechanics of soft tissues. Mike is an inventor on more than 30 issued or pending patents, serves in an advisory capacity to several industry and academic groups, and guest lectures at three academic institutions.

Sarah M. Jabbari is a patent attorney at the law firm of Sommer Barnard PC in Indianapolis. Sarah concentrates her practice on patent and trademark law with a particular focus on patent prosecution, non-infringement analysis, design around strategy development and freedom to operate analysis. She has experience in the preparation and prosecution of patents relating to the fields of chemical, medical technology, automotive, agriculture, and mechanical devices. Prior to private practice, Ms. Jabbari worked as an analytical chemist at AIT Laboratories in Indianapolis where she gained experience in gas chromatography (GC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), while conducting forensic analysis of biological fluids, fire debris and other substances.
Sarah graduated in 1994 from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis with B.S. degree in Biology and then earned the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree 2000 from the Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis. Sarah is admitted to practice in the state of Indiana and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She is also a member of AIPLA (American Intellectual Property Law Association).
